Scale and Proportion: Why Some Rooms Just Feel Right

There are some rooms that just “feel right” the moment you enter them. You may not be able to name it but you absolutely feel it. Often, scale and proportion are the reason. But what does that mean?

Scale is about relationship. How does the furniture relate to the architecture? How does the art relates to the walls? How is the lighting related to the ceiling height and the room below it? When these relationships are visible and relate to one another, interiors feel balanced and composed.

Proportion, on the other hand, allows a room to breathe. An oversized sectional grounds a living room. Large-scale art anchors walls versus leaving them feeling unfinished. Proportion can add serenity to a space.

In our projects, we are always thinking beyond individual pieces and thinking of how everything relates to one another. We consider how each element plays a role in the entirety of the interiors.

When scale and proportion are just right, nothing feels forced. Interiors feels settled and calm. This is typically what clients are seeking to describe when they can sense a space simply feels right.
