Seasonal Edit: Rethinking Your Entry Console

Your entry console is typically the first surface your guests see. It sets the tone for your entire home. In early fall, I like to give this piece special attention and reimagine my entry.

Instead of the colorful or playful accessories of summer, I reach for items with more substance. A sculptural ceramic vase, a tray in dark wood or rich leather bring a certain presence to your foyer. A substantial piece of art with depth adds a sophisticated note. Layering a candle or diffuser here adds an atmospheric aroma the moment anyone walks in the door.

Consider introducing a new area rug this season. Perhaps add two small ottomans to tuck under the console. Layer in a few neutral or deep jewel-toned coffee table books. Add in a petite brass lamp and you’ve added instant aura to your foyer — no matter the size.

Pro tip: Your console does not need to be overdone. But I do love being intentional with every element in my entrance. Two or three well-scaled pieces, handsome decor and a signature home fragrance to create a narrative. The beauty of this space is that it is intimate enough to change seasonally, while being important enough to shift the mood of the entire home.

The designer superpower? Knowing that less can indeed be more. Be thoughtful and exercise restraint. A few well-selected accents speak volumes about taste and elegance — and set the tone for the rest of your home.
