10 Tips to a Smart, Stylish Interior

10 Tips to a Smart, Stylish Interior

Below are some of my favorite tips to create an amazingly smart, stylish space.  Enjoy!

Tip #1: Every room needs a little black – it helps to ground the space.

10 Tips 2

Tip #2: When choosing a colorful paint color for your walls, go with the muddier version.  Trust me on this. 🙂

Tip #3: Always pick the paint color for your space last.  First, select fabric, then upholstery, then rugs, & then art work.  Then select the pain color to coordinate with those selections.

Tip #4: Edit and group your collectables.  It is more pleasing to the eye and keeps your space from looking cluttered.

10 Tips 5

Tip #5: Vary your lighting.  You need overhead task lighting, sconces, and lamps to create a beautifully lit room.  Light creates the ambience of your space, so make room in your budget for various types of lighting.

Tip #6: Install dimmers everywhere.  Lighting, again, is everything! – Go bright to “lighten” the mood, or dim the lights to set the tone for a relaxing evening.

10 Tips 7

Tip #7: Vary size and scale to mix and match patterns.

10 Tips 8

Tip #8: Over scaled lighting looks better than under scaled – when in doubt, bigger is better!

Tip #9: Scale art work to the wall.  The center should be hung at 68 inches high.  A small piece of art on a large wall looks out of place, so make sure the size of the piece is in scale with the size of the wall.

10 Tips 10

Tip #10: Rugs should be sized appropriately and not too small.  The front feet of the sofa and chairs should be on the rug.  In a dining room, when chairs are pulled away from the table, they should still be sitting on the rug.

  1. Yay! Great advice! I am so happy to read about going larger with lamps. I have never liked small lamps, so this assures me that my inner voice knew something. 😉
