Design Defined: King Bed vs. California King Bed

King Bed vs. California King Bed

So you’ve bought a fabulous new space with a palatial master suite.  You’ve picked out a rug, artwork, lighting, & night stands, but when it comes to the size of your bed, you are stumped.  You go into a mattress store and see a King bed. Great, looks big and comfortable.  Then you see a California King bed.  Hmm, that also looks big and comfortable…

What’s the difference, you ask?

Well, right off the bat, you need to keep in mind that there should be at least two feet of walkable space around the bed frame in your room.

Keeping that in mind, the California King bed is longer and narrower than a standard King.  For tall people, the extra length of the California King is really nice and, in addition, California King beds look better in long, narrow rooms than standard King size beds.  If you and your significant other like to cuddle, but need a lot of length, then the California King is perfect for you.  It is 72 in × 84 in or 183 cm × 213 cm according to Wikipedia.

The standard King size bed measures 76 in × 80 in or 193 cm × 203 cm and is great for those of us that like to spread out when sleeping… Or those of us that like to sleep with a pet (s).  There is plenty of room for (almost) everyone in your household on this giant bed that is literally fit for a King.

No matter what size bed you purchase, make sure it is of good quality. My personal favorite type of mattress is a 100% all natural latex from Pure Bliss and it feels like heaven.  My clients will agree with that sentiment also.  We spend 1/3 of our lives in bed… think of how much time you spend sleeping per day, per week, per month, per year – a high quality bed is a GREAT investment as it will determine your sleep quality, and no one, and I mean NO ONE, wants to be around someone who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed… Even if it is fit for a King…
